What is a Shutdown Ritual, and Why is it Helpful?

The time between finishing work and starting non-work activities or rest is more important than we think.

Without a clear transition, work can linger in our minds long after we’ve logged off. Emails, unfinished tasks, and tomorrow’s to-do list follow us into the evening, making it harder to switch off.

A shutdown ritual helps mark the end of work and the start of everything else. It doesn’t have to be complicated—it just has to be intentional.

Here are some ideas:

  • Complete a short checklist—clear your workspace, review the day, and check tomorrow’s calendar.

  • Take a "fake commute"—a short walk to signal the shift (great for anyone who, like me, works from home).

  • Listen to a podcast, music, or audiobook on the drive home.

  • Write a quick note-to-self for tomorrow’s priorities.

Whatever you choose, put it in your daily shutdown in your calendar and make it a habit.
